Desert Travel

Traveling through the desert is not for the faint of heart. Depending on where the desert is located and the time of year you can often experience severe weather changes. It can be blazing hot at noontime and plummet to freezing temperatures by evening. Sand that stretches for miles, barren land that seems to never end and an extreme quiet is typical of many desert areas.

Deserts in the United States

If you live in the United States you never have to leave the country to explore the desert. Adventure travelers can hop on over to California and spend weeks there. The Mojave Desert, Anzo-Borrega State Park, and Death Valley are all located in the United States. The Valley of Fire State Park is an example of what is known as a low desert. And even though they are all deserts they are all vastly different too.

Deserts of the World

Extreme heat is often one of the main characteristics of deserts throughout the world. The Sahara Desert is a vast desert land spreading for miles and miles. The Namibia in Africa also boasts extreme temperatures. The wildlife in Africa is magnificent. Desert elephants roam the Namibia. The Australian Outback is a desolate, seemingly forsaken desert area and the Wadi-Rum in Jordan is the stuff desert legends are made of.

Be Prepared

The most important thing any traveler can do when heading out to a desert destination is to be prepared. The sun can kill and burn in mere hours. Most deserts are extremely remote. Take plenty of water, gas for vehicles and protection from the sun.

Find out where you can go on your own. Be aware of what is expected from tourists. For example, you should not be feeding the animals. Be respectful of local customs, cultures and people.

Plan an itinerary and stick to it. If you are going exploring outside of a guided tour make sure friends and family know where you are going. Never go off exploring in a desert without telling someone. The results could be deadly. A few simple precautions are all that is needed for an exciting desert vacation.
