Preparing for Travel
Deserts are full of several types of environments, from the coolness of the mountains to the burning sun. Travelers will want to be aware what is available in the way of basic needs and also what to bring to protect against the weather. Intense Heat Deserts are hot. The sun is incredibly intense in desert terrain. Bring or plan to purchase lots of sunscreen and keep it constantly applied. Hats are a definite plus, but make sure they are the wide-brimmed type. A wide brim provides shade and protection. Ball caps do not provide sufficient protection. Long sleeved shirts or scarves made of lightweight, airy cotton or some wicking fabric, to cover arms and shoulders are a necessity. Carrying a scarf or hat that can be soaked in water is a good idea, too. Sunglasses should be worn to protect your eyes from the sun and desert glare. Carrying water with you is another definite. This is not optional. Bottled water can be purchased just about anywhere you go. A canteen that can be carried over the shoulder is nice for ease in toting the water around during your travels. A spray bottle full of water is handy for quickly cooling off. You can purchase the type that even has a small battery operated fan that is useful. Travel Basics Good walking shoes can make the difference between a successful travel adventure and one that is spent in agony. Bring these with you and make sure they are already broken in. You do not want to be shoe shopping minutes before going exploring. Open-toed shoes are not a good idea. Remember your feet can get sunburned too. And the sand is HOT. Do not forget your camera. A guide book is a great idea, as well. Personal Items If you take medication of any kind be sure and bring plenty with you. You never know when you will get stuck somewhere longer than you had planned. Some other basic items for personal use might include a sewing kit, travel alarm clock, first aid kit, wet wipes, safety pins, small tool kit, change, phone card, and pen and paper. Be Prepared Thinking and planning ahead for your desert vacation trip will mean more fun and less worry when you get there. If children will be traveling with you, especially young ones, be prepared for their daily needs. feedback@destinationdeserts.com |
