Valley of Fire State Park
Valley of Fire State Park is located in Nevada, not far outside Las Vegas. The Park is located within the Mojave Desert region of Nevada. The terrain’s magnificent beauty comes from the sand dunes and eroded sandstone cliffs and outcroppings. When the sun hits the floors and rough walls just right the park seems to be ablaze with color. Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest state park. General Information There is an entrance fee to get into the park. You can pay a vehicle fee of $6.00 or you can purchase an annual pass if you think you might visit again. The park is open year round. There is a Visitors Center where travelers can find information on the latest events. Exhibits on geology and park history are on display in the Visitors Center. Lodging Camping is the main way to go in this desert area. There are campsites within the park which cost $14.00 a night. Campgrounds have water, bathrooms, tables and grills. You can shower there, as well. If you want to stay at a hotel there are quite a few to choose from along I-15, the main highway leading to the park. Weather Spring and fall are the best times of the year to visit the park. During the summer months the temperatures soar. Temperatures of up to 120 degrees are not uncommon. Be advised that the air temperature does not cool off at night the way it does in some other desert climates. Winter is mild. Things to See and Do Valley of Fire National Park was home to several native peoples. The Fremont people and the Anasazi farmers both lived here in ancient times. The Atlatl Rock is renowned for its collection of amazing petroglyphs showing how the atlatl, the forerunner of the bow and arrow, was used. Visitors can also take a tour through Mouse’s Canyon, which is a half-mile trek that highlights other area petroglyphs. Simply spending time hiking and taking in the amazing geological formations is the main attraction at Valley of Fire State Park. The park’s points of interest are the Seven Sisters – red rock formations, Elephant Rock, the Beehive and Petrified Logs. There is an abundance of flora and fauna to enjoy, as well.
